I received my Master of Laws degree from the University of Helsinki in 1985, and completed my court training at the Iitti District Court. I worked as Counsel in the law office of Heikki Salo from 1987 to 1990, after which I became a Partner at Fredman and Månsson. I have been a member of the Finnish Bar Association since 1989. I received my Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Turku in 2018. I hold title of Docent (procedural law) at University of Helsinki. From 2023 to 2026 I served as Professor of Practice at the University of Helsinki.
I have litigated numerous human rights cases. The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has delivered judgments in 19 of these cases. I have also represented three clients in two cases in the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg. In Finland, 54 of my cases have been published as precedents in the Supreme Court yearbook and 19 in the Supreme Administrative Court yearbook.
From 2005 to 2011 I was a board member of the Finnish Bar Association and chaired the Bar's expert groups on Criminal Procedure Law and Human Rights Law. I have also been the chairman of the Bar Association's nomination committee. I was a member of the Government appointed National Discrimination Tribunal during years 2004-2014 and was a member of the Government appointed committee on the future development of the court system.
I am a member of the European Criminal Bar Association and of the Legal Experts Advisory Panel. I am also a board member and the treasurer of the Procedural Law Society of Finland and the editor of the Procedural Law blog.
